Severyn remembered with wistful nostalgia the days when traveling from one point to another meant throwing a few things in a satchel, gathering a handful of well-armed friends, and riding rough to his destination. Now he stood at the edge of the inn's courtyard with Stefanie at his side, watching the caravan of wagons, carriages and riders line up for the procession back to the road. Servants and guards made up most of the entourage while the inn's staff rushed about, full of pride and excitement to have hosted the king himself.

Four days of the deluge had left standing water in the courtyard and word coming in from the surrounding countryside told of flooding streams and fields. Even Messerling, on the highest ground in the area, faced another delay in planting - the fourth such in the past month.

Imbued with primal rage, it hunted, seeking whatever tried to escape its rampage, man or beast. It walled off road and roared up stairwells, making no distinction between peasant or lord, slave or high priest.
